Arable Land

Arable land refers to the land which is able to be used for farming on. This land is seen as different from normal land in which you can grow crops on as arable land tends to be on much wider scales- at around 12million square miles, even including jungle land which is out of use. At current there are arguments as to whether to size of arable land available is getting smaller.

The best forms of arable land is that which has previously been cover by rivers or seas, as these tend not to have mass floods unlike some general farming land does. An area which is an example of this is the land around the Nile, this is because when the Nile floods and then clears it leaves behind silt, which is a combination of soil and rocks, silt can then be used as a fertilizer for crops even when the land isn't in a particularly good condition, when it is covered in silt it is able to start its fertility again. Although the local community may try to prevent this, and in some cases they do in order for their lives not to be effected by the flooding it cases a massive impact on the land often lending to it not being able to be used as arable land in the future.

Every few year's geographical experts release figures showing which countries currently have the most and least arable land. The most recent figures that have been released are from 2005 which showed 55.39% of land in Bangladesh is arable, a number of countries have no arable land, and a few examples of these are Jersey, Isle of Man and Gibraltar. The UK is said to have 23.23% of their land that is arable.

In recent times arable land have become increasingly popular to buy not just for growing crops on but also for building purposes, as the land has a high level of nutrients in it grass can be grown quickly meaning development company's can build on the land. Arable land is fairly inexpensive to start with due to it being mainly out the way of anywhere, however if you buy arable land which is based near a new development the price of the land increases massively due to the mass size of the land, it could become a great place for a firm to build on, due to this arable land has become a big areas for investing in.
