Farmers Markets

These are outdoor markets which allow farmers to sell their produce to the public; they are also called green markets. They are known popular as the produce is fresh and tends to be locally grown. Not only is the food fresh, it also tends to be organic meaning that meat is often from animals that are raised in a good environment. These farmers also tend to sell free range products, and handmade cheeses, insuring only the finest quality.

A lot of locals also believe that by going to farmers markets they are both helping to keep natural sources alive but that they are also helping farmers stay in business, and in most cases this is probably true. When farmers sell their produce to wholesalers they tend to get a fairly low price, with it not being that much higher than the cost of production this therefore means they are making little of no profit. However by going straight to the costumers and cutting out the middle man farmers are able to sell their goods at a higher price as costumers are willing to do this due to the quality of it.

Farmers markets are extremely popular world wide and are often a local event in towns and villages aboard, this is often an attraction to travellers who are visiting a country and want to get a real sample of village life, culture and traditional local food. However you don't just have to go to small villages in towns like Spain and Italy for farmers markets, bigger countries such as the USA have now seen an increase in people using markets like this to buy their food, this is since people have become more aware about the impact of what junk foods have on their health and so people have become more concerned about buying and eating the right foods. In New York City alone there are now 44 famers markets which supply food to people in the city but also support farmers around the area. They have also found that people don't just go to the markets for their fruit and vegetables but they also get an extremely high amount of people using them in seasonal times such as Thanksgiving, and Christmas getting all the trimmings from these local markets.
