Free Range Farming

Free range farming is when poultry are allowed to move freely in the outdoors, unlike poultry farming where they kept only indoors. Free range farming has a number of rule, for example farmer who run these farms have to allow their poultry to roam outside for at least half their live most of these chickens live to at least 56 days so that's at least 28 days they have to spend in the fresh daytime air. Even if these farms have broiler systems they have to give the chickens a continuous access to outside in the day and sheds to go into at night. In European rules each chicken should also each have one square metre of space each to move about in.

Farmers choose to go with free range farming as it they find their animals are a lot happier and livelier which then allows them to get a higher quality produce which then allows them to charge consumers more, making them more money.

Free range farming allows the chickens to grow naturally allowing them to have a natural diet and lifestyle, with both being a lot more suited to them than that if they reared in battery cages. The chickens aren't also made to grow quicker than they should therefore they don't suffer from the leg problems that chickens in batteries do, this allows them a better quality of life as they don't suffer from heart or leg problems not only this but they are allow to do natural activities such as pecking and scratching. Allowing their chickens to roam outside also benefits farmers as their manure can be used to hell make crops grow!

However finding a suitable farm for free range farming can take an awful long time as it needs to have a number of factors such as, enough drainage so there aren't any worms , it also needs have some protection from heavy winds and also from predators. Free range farming is also difficult as too much heat, cold or damp can all have a major effect on the animals which is why battery farmers have more success over free range farmers as they are able to control the weather conditions unlike free range farmers.
