Non-Arable Land

Non-arable land is the land that cannot to used for farming, this normal due to it not having one, or several of the elements needed in order for crops to be grown, such as; the wrong temperature too hot or too cold, too rainy, too rocky, highly polluted or not enough nutrient in the ground and little or no source to fresh water. The amount of sunlight the area gets can also have a huge effect on the land as if crops don't get enough sunlight it affects their reproductive circle as they need sunlight in order for the photosynthesis process to happen.

Non-arable land is found largely in under developed countries where starvation is around, this is due to them not being able to farm any crops which would feed them. Due to this land being generally seen as wasteland and being deserted nomad's tend to be found there, these are a group of people which travel from place to place never staying at one particular spot for a long period of time they are what we would call gypsies. However within the nomad culture there are 3 different types of nomads which travel from place to place these are; Peripatetic nomads which can also be found in developed countries as they travel they also offer a trade allowing them to work in that place for some time, another type of nomads are pastoralists who take herds around with them, and the final are nomadic hunter gatherers who follow the seasons in order to get food.

However this land can be made into arable land by adding some of the elements that the land is missing, for example digging and installing irrigation canals and wells, if the land is too hot then adding trees for shade is often done, digging hills in order to protect crops from heavy winds and having greenhouses to supply inside light and heat to crops that will need it, these are just a few of the techniques that can be put in place on these areas. This is often down to help under developed countries become far more self-sufficient as they are able to have their own food source, not only this but it increase the food they have available to them which hopefully means the number of people suffering from starvation declines. An example of a source of non-arable land that has been turn into arable land is the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland which had previously been too rocky, however they set about making it arable by covering the land with a layer of shallow seaweed and sand from the ocean, this has since allowed them to reap the benefits by growing crops there.
